Dear Vista Community,

We’ve had a great start to the 2025-26 school year! As we get our year underway, I’d like to take a moment to talk about something important at Vista: the story of middle school. Too often, the middle school years are seen as a time to “just get through.” I believe differently. I believe middle school is a time to grow through. It’s a time to expand your knowledge and discover more about yourself, your strengths, your voice and your place in the world.

At Vista, we can change the narrative of the middle school story into one that reflects a place where students learn deeply, are seen and valued for who they are, and where they know – without question – that they matter. Every student. Every day.

We’re building a community where students can strive for academic excellence and feel that they’re loved and supported – a place where their curiosity is sparked, ideas are heard and identities are honored. Last year, we began heading that direction with new endeavors supporting student belonging and inclusion. Highlights included:

·        Kwechost Club, a place for Native American students to interact and participate in cultural activities
·        Latinos in Action, an elective course focusing on empowering Latino youth through leadership, service and college and career readiness
·        Sixth Grade Knitting Club
·        Sixth Grade Intramural Sports
·        Robotics Club
·        Hosting a Coastal Jam -- a cultural gathering celebrating indigenous traditions, songs and dances

In support of our goals, our staff has been engaging in professional development specific to universally designed instruction, trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices and professional learning communities. This work helps improve student learning, curricular alignment and teaching practices.

Changing the narrative will take students, staff, families and the broader community. Together, we can make Vista a place where middle school isn't just something to endure, but a meaningful, empowering and joyful chapter in a young person’s life. Thank you for being part of this journey. I'm excited for all that lies ahead.

Sincerely,
J.J. Jensen
